RIVERHEAD, NY —Riverhead schools will be closed for in-person instruction through Wednesday, November 4 after "many" additional transportation were quarantined, district officials said. The Riverhead Central School District initially closed Friday after transportation employees tested positive for the coronavirus. Christine Tona, interim superintendent, said while there have been no new positive cases reported, the additional employees quarantined means less drivers for the buses, she said. "Unfortunately, since we cannot transport students, we must close our schools to students for in-person instruction and continue remote instruction through the end of the quarantine period," she said. Riverhead CSD students will continue with remote instruction through November 3, she said. There will be no transportation for students who attend private and parochial schools, including the Riverhead Charter School; there will be no transportation to any BOCES placements, including High School CTE placements, and those students will also receive remote instruction, Tona said. While schools are closed to students, meals will be available every weekday for pick-up at each of the K to 4 schools, and at additional off-site locations listed below. 10:15 a.m Phillips Avenue Elementary Riley Avenue Elementary Aquebogue Elementary Roanoke Avenue Elementary 11:15 a.m. Brookaven Avenue and Tyler Street 1750 West Main Street Doctor's Path Apartments Lewis Street and Doris Avenue 12:15 p.m. Wood Road Trail and Riverside Avenue 1355 Roanoke Avenue Hill Rise and Hill Circle, Calverton Hills 821 East Main Street "I appreciate your understanding during this difficult time. The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority," Tona said. "Please remember the importance of wearing a mask when in contact with anyone outside of your household and please avoid large gatherings when possible. It is vitally important that we are all mindful of our actions and possible consequences of not following the recommended health guidance. Together we can keep our community as safe as possible."
