Janitor and Cleaner Job Duties Janitors work to keep the common areas of the school clean and sanitized. Janitors take out trash, clean floors and windows, and may perform simple maintenance tasks. Janitors generally have an assigned list of duties each day that they are responsible for completing. Janitors are often responsible for identifying needed supplies and completing orders for them. Janitors also will note and report repairs that need to be made in the facility. Physical Capabilities Janitorial work often consists of manual labor, and janitors need to maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to complete job duties. Janitors perform tasks like cleaning bathrooms, sweeping and mopping floors, emptying trash, maintaining clean playground areas, and performing routine maintenance tasks. A janitor must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend down or stoop frequently and may need to lift heavy objects. Mental Capabilities Janitors must understand written and verbal instructions. Janitorial training normally occurs on the job and includes proper cleaning and sanitizing techniques. Janitors should also understand the health hazards of chemical cleaning supplies particularly when they are used around children. Janitors may need to do basic plumbing repair such as fixing a leaky faucet or unstopping a clogged toilet. Perform Heavy Cleaning Duties Janitors perform many heavy cleaning duties such as cleaning floors, removing trash, lifting and moving tables and furniture and washing and painting walls, windows, and glass. Custodians often clean restrooms, mop or dry mop floors, vacuum carpets, and dust furniture and equipment. Perform Building Maintenance Tasks Janitors may also be responsible for performing building maintenance tasks such as painting, performing minor repairs, changing light bulbs, and exterminating rodents and insects. They may fix leaky plumbing, maintain heating and cooling equipment and perform light carpentry duties. Job Hours: 9:30 AM - 6:30 PM Monday - Friday Job Type: Full-time Pay: $10.00 - $11.00 per hour depending on experience Education: High school or equivalent (Preferred) Experience: Custodial Experience: 1 year (Preferred) Work Location: One location
