HOOVER, AL — The City of Hoover has granted entertainment district status to Stadium Trace Village on John Hawkins Parkway. This will be the first entertainment district in Hoover, but it is the latest in several recent designations in the Birmingham metro. What the designation means is that now, Avondale businesses with alcohol licenses can sell alcohol to be consumed off-premises within certain boundaries and hours. Stadium Trace Village joins Birmingham's Avondale area and Five Points South as recently designated entertainment districts. Trussville is also considering making the downtown area an entertainment district, and Birmingham's Uptown area has been given the designation as well. Entertainment districts pave the way for festivals, parades and other events that could boost commerce in a particular area, although concerned residents have expressed that it could increase underage drinking and put a strain on local police. A statement from the Hoover City Council said law enforcement "would have the authority to close any entertainment district or require that people disperse from the area if he believes it is appropriate to do so to protect the public's health, safety and welfare."
