Description

A Community Meets.: Early Ellicott City Black history, a Historic African American Church, a Log Cabin, and Lynching. Black History of Ellicott City before the Civil War. The county seat of government for Howard County is Ellicott City, and once upon a time it was called “Ellicott’s Mills.”While many know the name Ellicott, fewer know the names of the Free Black and Mulatto men and families who were landowners and businessmen existing among a community of enslaved families in the area and county. If you’ve seen or visited the Thomas Isaac log cabin in Ellicott City, you’ve experienced a piece of their history, but not the way we will be showing you. Our nonprofit, Howard County Lynching Truth & Reconciliation, Inc., sponsored an Ellicott City Black History Roundtable research initiative regarding the accurate history of the Thomas Isaac log cabin and its intersection with the history of the historic St. Luke’s A.M.E. Church. It was designed to have two aspects: Truth (research and compilation of facts) and Reconciliation in which the community would examine and discuss the research findings. The researchers have finished their work, and have compiled it into a research publication which will be unveiled at this event. The history of the cabin intersects with the lynching inquiry for our county, in ways that weren’t expected. We invite county residents, anyone interested in Black History, and those supportive of the lynching inquiry work for Howard County to join us for this kickoff event of the Reconciliation side of this work. Let us introduce you to some phenomenal stories! Though the event room (Lucille Clifton Room) has a capacity of 120, we are capping the capacity at 60 for this event to make it more comfortable for attendees. Masks are required. Dinner, snacks and beverages can be purchased and will be provided by restaurant personnel. Registration is mandatory, so that the attendance cap can be achieved. Questions can be directed to: [email protected] This event is proudly sponsored by Patapsco Heritage Greenway.
