We are celebrating Black History Month and our local icons with a viewing party for HBO's "A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks" Please join us for a viewing party of HBO’s “A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks” with special guest Devin Allen. Devin Allen is an American photographer, photojournalist, and activist based in Baltimore, Maryland. He gained national attention after the Freddie Gray protests in 2015, when his documentary photograph entitled "Baltimore Uprising" was published as Time magazine's May 2015 cover photo. His documentary photo of the George Floyd protests was published as Time's June 2020 cover. Allen's photographs are held in the Smithsonian collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Kondwani Fidel will also be joining us to introduce the film. Both Kondwani Fidel and Devin Allen’s books will be available to purchase via our friends at Greedy Reads and signed by the author. There is no guarantee that all purchased books will be signed. Fidel’s work has been praised by literary and civil rights giants such as Ibram X. Kendi, Eve L. Ewing, and DeRay McKesson. Fidel is the author of The Anti-Racist: How to Start the Conversation and Take Action (2020), Hummingbirds in the Trenches and Raw Wounds. He received his BA in English from Virginia State University, and his MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore. Fidel was honored with the Baltimore City 2018 Civil Rights Literary Award, Inspiring Voices award, and his bio-film Hummingbirds in The Trenches was nominated for Amazon’s 2019 All Voices Film Festival. A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks For decades, trailblazing photographer Gordon Parks brought the human struggle of the Black community out of the shadows and onto the pages of LIFE magazine. This documentary explores Parks' enduring legacy through the lens of three contemporary photographers, and spotlights his visionary work and its impact on the next generation of artists.
