Description

This is the third of four writing workshops put on by the Johnston County Writers Group in conjunction with the NEA Big Read Clayton. This third of four workshops, called “Write It Out: Using Words to Write a Memoir Your Way,” will be a free guided writing workshop with Cindy Brookshire. In the workshop, participants will read passages from Mango Street that deal with detailed memories of people and will share personal stories of family, using a personal item (such as a quilt, photo, recipe, etc.) that they bring to class. Participants will have time to write and share their own writing and will have the opportunity to brainstorm how they could write a family story or tell that story through personal artifacts. Pine Level author Cindy Brookshire is the facilitator of the Johnston County Writers Group. Workshop participants will be invited to read, reflect and write on prompts from The House on Mango Street. Everyone will be encouraged to share their own experiences as well. Each participant will receive a copy of The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, along with a journal and pen. Masks are required for this indoor event.
