Description
Hey peeps, I just re-scaped my freshwater tank. Here are some free live plant-like items for your tank!
-African Water Fern (Bolbitis heudelotii), 4 small clumps available, with a few leaves on each. My big Mama plant broke apart after some disturbance. The first picture is representative of how lush and large it can be, given some time. The 2nd picture is representative of what I've got four of. Trim off any dead branches and let it do its thing.
This plant grows via a tuber, which you shouldn't bury. Either let it rest on top of your substrate or super-glue the tuber to wood/decor. It will send out anchoring roots that fish like hiding in-between. The more CO2 and light it gets, the leaves will nearly turn a lovely translucent green. AWF will also grow slowly in unfertilized low light conditions or even semi-terrestrial settings.
-Christmas Moss (I think?), 2 small clumps available. I have a picture showing it growing wild on a chunk of wood (I super-glued a small strand, originally). These small clumps are already attached to some debris, so place 'em wherever you'd like. Eventually it can become big and bushy, trim as needed.
I live up by U.P. mall, in South Bend. I'll be around this week (1/31), so send me a TXT and I'll pour them into a plastic baggie to whomever is able to make it through the weather this week.
FYI, I kinda nuked my tank (hydrogen peroxide plant soaks and seltzer water tank fill) to kill off excess snails and some tenacious algae in late December. I've not seen anything else moving among these, but might be best to quarantine, do a salt dip or do a third 75:25 water:peroxide, 5min dip. Leaving this in these dips for too long is pry what angered the Mama plant originally, alas.
Cheers,
-Mike.
