WAKEFIELD, MA — The group that will make recommendations on Wakefield's new Warrior logo had its first meeting Tuesday night, getting up to speed on the purpose of the group and discussing what's next. The Warrior Logo Committee is tasked with coming up with two or three logo options that Superintendent Doug Lyons to present to the School Committee. The committee discussed hopes and challenges for the group. Notes from the meeting note the importance of implementing diversity, simplicity and the town's core values, among other things. "Make sure everyone is represented in the logo," one note reads. Some of the challenges included finding common ground in what has so far been a divisive issue and phasing out the logo. The committee is led by Wakefield Memorial High School Principal Amy McLeod and includes Assistant Principal Joe Mullaney, teacher Will Karvouniaris, Director of Athletic, Health & Wellness Brendan Kent and Lyons. It's also made up of 10 students and four community members. The School Committee last March voted to retire the Warrior logo which featured a Native American, deeming it offensive. The next month voters supported keeping the logo in a nonbinding question. The group meets again Monday, Feb. 7, where some ideas and images will be presented.
