BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday night. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Destiny Washington, 20, of Trussville.
Police said Washington was driven to a local hospital where police said she succumbed to her injuries.
According to the police department, around 9:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to Children's Hospital, located at 1601 5th Avenue South, for a report of an adult gunshot victim who arrived by way of private vehicle.
Children's Hospital staff ultimately pronounced Washington deceased, police said.
Police said a preliminary investigation suggests Washington was shot inside of a vehicle while inthe parking lot of the Hill University Center, which is at 1400 University Blvd.
Washington was then driven to Children's Hospital by way of private vehicle for emergency medical care. Detectives said they are working to discover a motive for the shooting.
UAB officials issued a statement to WVTM-TV that reads in part:
"We are devastated that tragedy hit the UAB family overnight when a student lost her life after being shot in the parking lot outside the Hill Student Center. Police believe this occurred during a meeting arranged to sell headphones."
