MIDDLESEX, NJ — COVID-19 hospitalizations continued to decline nationally, but the country still needs time to get back to pre-omicron variant hospital occupancy levels. Around 128,500 inpatient beds were being used for COVID-19 patients as of Feb. 1, which was a drop of more than 20,000 beds from the prior week, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. State health officials in New Jersey reported to the federal government Feb. 1 that approximately 64 percent of inpatient beds and 47 percent of intensive care unit beds in hospitals across the state were occupied. Around 13 percent of inpatient beds and 16 percent of ICU beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported. The latest hospitalization numbers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Middlesex County, included below, are from Jan. 21-27 and represent a rolling seven-day average. Note that the figures for occupied hospital beds sometimes exceed 100 percent; this is because more than one patient sometimes occupies a bed over the course of a week.
