BIRMINGHAM, AL — With needy families struggling with food insecurity this holiday season, the Birmingham Police Department is holding its Christmas Food Giveaway Saturday at the Sheraton Hotel Birmingham downtown. BPD's Community Outreach and Public Education (COPE) division organized the event, which is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is a rain or shine event. Distribution of food items will be on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. The address for the hotel is 2101 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd. N. Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2020, more than 50 million Americans will not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
