CONCORD, NH — If you've seen your electric bills lately, you're probably pretty shocked. Some have seen their monthly bills nearly double overnight. Not unlike gasoline prices and other consumer goods, utility companies pass those regulated basic service electric supply rate increases onto consumers. The primary blame is increased global energy demand — made worse due to a reduction in domestic production of natural gas and oil in the United States. Utility companies, however, are encouraging customers to take advantage of energy assistance funds to help pay bills through the state's low-income home energy assistance program. "There is more energy assistance funding available for our customers than ever before and we want to make sure those who need help are aware of the many programs they can take advantage of, especially now, during these cold winter months," Jess Cain, the vice president of customer operations at Eversource, said. "Customers who've never needed help before may even qualify for these programs." Eversource also has a payment plan customers can enroll in to protect against service disruption. Unitil also has more information here about the increased pricing. Grants Available For Cop Body Cams Local and county law enforcement agencies can be reimbursed by the state for body-worn or dashboard cameras, software, and other expenses. Up to $50,000 is available for agencies in an effort to improve transparency in police work, a key recommendation of the Governor's Commission on Law Enforcement Accountability, Community and Transparency. "This was a key component of our LEACT Commission's recommendations, and represents another step the state is taking to ensure and promote public safety and public accountability," Gov. Chris Sununu said. "New Hampshire law enforcement remains the gold standard across the country, and it is because of their collaborative work with the LEACT Commission that we can move forward on these crucial initiatives." The deadline to apply for the funds is noon on March 15. "The safety of all law enforcement officers across the state is imperative," Commissioner Robert Quinn of the New Hampshire Department of Safety said. "These grant funds will help departments put important equipment in place to protect officers who put their lives at risk every day and enhance trust with the public they serve." Applications can be found online, linked here. Using 'Regulated Classroom' To Build Resilience The New Hampshire Department of Education is partnering with The Regulated Classroom to assist educators in preparing students for learning and reducing stress in the classroom. The Peterborough company develops resources for teachers using amplified dysregulation in their instructional environments — including diminished levels of impulse control, limited attention span, heightened levels of aggression, disinterest, and poor motivation. The firm received a $815,000 contract to provide 2,500 toolkits for teachers. "Teachers are hurting and students are hurting," Emily Read Daniels, the educator who developed the program, said. "They need meaningful resources to help heal and transform. We want to get our toolkit in as many hands as possible so that when teachers are in the moment, they can promptly regulate, engage, teach and connect. Making these resources available, for free, to New Hampshire educators is a positive step toward resilience and growth." Here is everything else going on in New Hampshire right now.
