CLEVELAND — Legendary Detroit rapper Eminem was announced Wednesday as one of 17 nominees for the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The hip-hop superstar was nominated in his first year of eligibly, which comes 25 years after the release of his debut album, "Infinite." He would go on to become the best-selling U.S. artist in the first decade of the 2000s. Detroit rock and roll group MC5 was also nominated to the hall of fame for the sixth time. The radical 60s band formed in Detroit has been one of the more notable rock & roll hall of fame snubs. Many consider the band as playing in innovative part in the punk rock movement in America. If Eminem and MC5 get inducted into the hall of fame, they will become the 20th and 21st acts inducted from Detroit, and the first since the Miracles were selected in 2012. Inductees will be announced in May 2022, with the induction ceremony coming in the fall. Fans can vote online, through the Rock Hall website, for which artists should be inducted this year. Votes can also be cast at the museum in Cleveland. The top five fan vote recipients will get a single vote toward induction. Other first-time nominees to the hall of fame include: Beck, Duran Duran, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon and A Tribe Called Quest. Detroit natives Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder and Kid Rock were not nominated, despite years of eligibility. The White Stripes will become eligible in 2023. To qualify for induction into the Rock Hall, artists must have released a commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of their nomination.
