DANVERS, MA — Jake Burt remains on the road from Danvers to the Heights to Gillette Stadium. The former St. John's Prep and Boston College star tight end signed with the New England Patriots practice squad on Sunday — meaning the Patriots can call him up for game day duty at any time. Burt, who signed with his hometown team as a rookie free agent after going undrafted in April, was a training camp, but brought back on the practice squad days later. The Lynnfield native was a star at St. John's with 28 receptions and seven receptions his senior year. He battled some injuries during his time at BC, but had a solid senior season with 15 catches, 202 yards and a touchdown to go with his strong blocking for BC standout running back — and current Green Bay Packers ball carrier — A.J. Dillon. The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder could serve as a blocking tight end in the NFL helping protect Cam Newton this season as the former Most Valuable Player debuts with the Patriots after two injury-fiddled seasons in Carolina. .@JakeBurt23 x @Patriots #WeAreBC | #GetIn pic.twitter.com/nAcGd3a2s3— BC Football (@BCFootball) April 30, 2020 More Patch Coverage: Motivated New Patriots QB Cam Newton: 'I Wake Up Mad'
