For our final History Happy Hour of the Spring/Summer season, John Goff will present, Pioneer Canners: How the Baxter Canning Company Built a Maine Brand on Thursday, June 9, at 5:30pm.
Headquartered in Brunswick, the H.C. Baxter Canning Company operated canneries in several areas around the state from the late 19th through the mid-20th centuries. Pioneered by James Phinney Baxter, who also served as Mayor of Portland, the canning company was founded by his son Hartley C. Baxter, and involved other family members including Governor Percival Baxter, who created Baxter State Park. The canneries employed hundreds of Maine citizens from various walks of life and heritages. Learn more about this fascinating family, its company and workers, and the legacy it left on mass-produced foods and the Maine brand.
