Small FIre Breaks Out At Norwood Town Hall

NORWOOD, MA - A small fire broke out in Norwood Town Hall Tuesday afternoon, causing the phone and computer systems there to shut down for nearly an hour. Norwood Fire Chief David Hayes confirmed that the fire started at 1:10 p.m. in the information technology room on the third floor. "A battery backup generator caught on fire," Hayes said. "It supplies power to the electronic system in Town Hall. All the phones and computers went down in Town Hall." He noted that 911 was still active because it is on a separate phone system. The small fire was put out with two extinguishers, he added, noting that Tony Mazzucco, the town's general manager, called him to alert him to the fire "before I was even on the scene." "There was no damage to the structure, and there were no injuries," Hayes continued. "The damaged equipment was removed." Service was quickly restored to the town offices. "Everyone is fine," confirmed Sharon Cartier, the executive asssistant to the general manager, at 3:30 p.m. "It was just a small fire and the equipment that was on fire was removed."
