Description

Raise self-awareness & understanding of parenting children who have experienced trauma & are a different race or culture than their family. Both racial and ethnic identity are important facets in how we view ourselves and how others view us. It may sound simple, and yet it can actually be rather complex - especially for children and youth who are part of a cross racial family. What can you do to help the child in your care thrive in your family? Cross Racial Parenting is open to any adoptive, foster, or kinship families and will guide parents in how to have the challenging discussions about race with their children. It will incorporate exercises designed to increase self-awareness and understand the additional layers of parenting children that have experienced trauma and are a different race or culture than their family. The training itself, may cause discomfort within the participants; but, will be provided within a safe environment. Presenter Stacey Goodson is an experienced cross-racial foster and adoptive parent with more than ten years working as a child welfare professional. There is no cost for adoptive, foster or kinship families to attend. For questions contact [email protected] AFSN became a service of D.A. Children need forever homes, and the resources of AFSN help parents find the courage to adopt. AFSN is is a community providing adoptive parents the tools and confidence to be successful parents. Love, combined with confidence can equip any family to grow together. We support and nurture parents and children after adoption so they can grow into strong, healthy and loving families.
