NEW YORK CITY — Wordle, smurdle, the real question is how do you get from Borough Hall to Times Square? A new twist on the popular word game has hit the internet to test New Yorkers on their commuting savvy and it is, of course, called "Subwaydle." The new online Wordle clone has a familiar set of rules, albeit for a game without any words at all. "Guess the SUBWAYDLE in 6 tries," the game's instructions state. "Each guess must a be a valid subway trip involving 3 trains using available transfers between them." Wordle exploded in popularity so much in recent weeks that the New York Times bought the game for a price "in the low seven figures," according to a report in the venerable Gray Lady. Subwaydle has likewise taken an express line into New Yorkers' and game lovers' hearts. They took to their Twitter platforms to highlight the transit-inspired game. "Wordle? That's for novices," tweeted Second Ave. Sagas. "Test your subway routing knowledge with @_blahblahblah 's Subwayle. Make sure to hit that 'hint' button [if] you're flying blind." "Wordle, but in the most New York way possible," tweeted Four Freedoms Dems. The game was developed by Sunny Ng, who told Kotaku that the game was inspired by trivia nights at the New York City Transit Museum and other Wordle variants. For at least one gamer, Subwaydle represented a hopeful respite from fears about how the New York Times will handle the currently-free Wordle. Tweeted @PapiGrego, "They'll ruin wordle, but they'll never ruin subwaydle."
