WESTPORT, CT — Firefighters extinguished a structure fire at a Westport home late Monday afternoon after flames extended from the home's chimney into the walls. In a news release, Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan said crews arrived at the home, located on Westway Road, around 4:30 p.m. An occupant of the home reported seeing flames on the exterior chimney of a wood burning stove, Marsan said. When crews first arrived at the home, they located a working fire on the back outside wall of the house. After confirming everyone was out of the building, crews stretched a hose line into the house, Marsan said. Firefighters also opened up walls on two floors of the house and found active fire burning on the first floor extending up the walls into the second floor. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and checked to make sure the fire had not spread further into the home. No injuries were reported, Marsan said. The Westport Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Mutual aid was provided by the Fairfield Fire Department for a rapid intervention team and the Norwalk Fire Department for station coverage, Marsan said.
