PITTSBURGH, PA — Yoi! Double yoi! Point Park University will hold Myron Cope Day next week, hosting a series of panel discussions on the life of the legendary Pittsburgh sportscaster and the inventor of the Terrible Towel. The free event will feature some of the city's most well-known sports writers and broadcasters. Open to the public, it will occur Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the university's Lawrence Hall. Born Myron Kopelman, the University of Pittsburgh graduate initially was a sportswriter whose work appeared in such magazines as The Saturday Evening Post and Sports Illustrated. He had a long-running talk show on WTAE-AM radio and spent 35 years as a color analyst on Steelers radio broadcasts from 1970 through 2005. He died in 2008. The panel discussions will include: Myron Cope: Print Journalist, 10-10:45 a.m. Panelists will be Ed Bouchette, senior staff writer at The Athletic, and Tom McMillan, co-director of the Pittsburgh Center for Sports Media and Marketing Myron Cope: Broadcast Journalist, 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Panelists are WPXI-TV sports director Alby Oxenreiter and WTAE-TV sports director Andrew Stockey.Myron Cope: Radio Color Commentator, 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Panelists include Pirates play-by-play announcer Greg Brown and Bill Hillgrove, play-by-play announcer for the Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers.The event will conclude with two Myron Cope soundalike contests.
