ADDISON, IL — A Glendale Heights man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to second degree murder in the 2018 shooting death of Miguel Reynoso, 20, in Addison. Jesse Garza, 20, was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, which prosecutors say was gang-related.
Late June 7, 2018, Addison police responded to a report of shots fired near Green Oaks Park. Reynoso was found at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced dead.
According to prosecutors, Reynoso was in a sedan when he encountered a group of people who included Garza. The other people who were in the sedan with Reynoso started exchanging gang signs and making threats with the group, a news release said.
Prosecutors say Reynoso and another person, both of whom were armed, got out of the sedan. Garza then fired his gun and shot Reynoso, who fled in the sedan. Garza was arrested after an investigation.
"Unfortunately, gang-fueled violence such as we saw in this case, continues to plague our communities," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement after Garza's sentencing.
He added, "The senseless murder of a human being simply because of foolish gang rivalries has a detrimental effect on the entire community and will not be tolerated in DuPage County, as Mr. Garza learned today."
