DOUGLASVILLE, GA — A Chapel Hill Middle School student beat dozens of other students to win the 2022 Douglas County School System spelling bee last week. Kelechukwu Ohia, an eighth grader at CHMS, is this year's spelling bee champion, which took place virtually last Tuesday. Behind Ohia, Gabrielle Cooper, a seventh grader from Turner Middle School, was the runner-up, and Alyssa Thomas of Chestnut Log Middle School finished third place. Along with being able to spell words such as "cornucopia" and "phenomenal," students also took part in vocabulary rounds where they were asked to pick definitions for chosen words. For the top three finishers, prizes were provided by the Douglas County chapter of the Georgia Association of Educators, and all participants in the spelling bee got a certificate and a pocket dictionary. Ohia will advance to the online regional competition Feb. 26. Congrats Kelechukwu, Gabrielle and Alyssa! Gabrielle Cooper, a seventh grader at Turner Middle School, placed second in the 2022 DCSS Spelling Bee.
