Here are the top 3 stories in Anchorage today: The city's abatement program has started to clear homeless camps in the middle of winter for the first time. It is raising many concerns from local advocates. Policymakers claim that this will gently encourage the homeless to receive help at shelters, but many people think otherwise. There are many issues within shelters for the homeless, including poor conditions that haven't been solved. (Anchorage Daily News)Wasilla High School hockey players recently had an amazing and fun day skating with local special education students at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena. They all shared plenty of smiles and created many fond memories to look back on. This event was beneficial for everyone involved. It helped the special education kids with socialization skills and helped the general education kids with learning how to communicate with all types of people. (Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman) The COVID-19 case rate in Alaska continues to be the highest in the nation and hospital staffing remains a persistent issue. This surge has been driven by the omicron variant of coronavirus. This past Monday, health officials announced over 4,000 new cases among residents and non-residents.
