BROCKTON, MA—A former Brockton mayoral candidate was arrested on Wednesday night and charged with illegally possessing ammunition and several motor vehicle violations after police found a bullet in his car during a motor vehicle stop.
According to the Brockton Police Department, Jimmy Pereira, 29, was speeding and tailgating an ambulance on Main Street, leading to police pulling him over and searching his vehicle to find single round of 9mm ammunition. Pereira was arrested and charged with illegal possession of ammunition, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, speeding, and obstructing an emergency vehicle.
Pereira was arraigned in Brockton District Court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on January 7.
Pereira ran for mayor in Brockton in 2017 and 2019, losing to Mayor Bill Carpenter and Mayor Robert Sullivan.
