Description
An Evening of Poetry with Two Masters! Award-Winning Poet Linda Gregerson in Conversation with Acclaimed Poet, Editor, Educator David Baker! Join award-winning poet, Linda Gregerson, as she launches Canopy, her stunning new poetry collection that casts a fierce, big-hearted eye on our last, tumultuous decade, and our fragile environment. She will be in conversation with acclaimed poet, educator, editor, and literary critic David Baker. This event is free and will be held at Gramercy Books with full safety protocols. Ohio Poetry Association and Kenyon Review are Gramercy’s Community Partners for this program. Linda Gregerson’s long-awaited new collection is a tour de force, a compendium of lives touched by the radical fragility of the planet and, ultimately, the endless astonishment and paradox of being human within the larger ecosystem, “in a world where every breath I take is luck.” From the Syrian refugee and ecological crises to police brutality and COVID, to the Global Seed Vault buried under permafrost, the poems ask: How does consciousness relate to the individual body, the individual to the communal, the community to our environment? How do we mourn a loved one, and how do we mourn strangers? How does consciousness relate to the individual body, the individual to the communal, the community to our environment? The magnificent poems in Canopy catalogue and reckon with humanity and the natural world, mortality, rage, love, grief, and survival. Linda Gregerson is the author of six previous collections of poetry, most recently of Prodigal: New and Selected Poems. A former Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Gregerson is the Caroline Walker Bynum Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan, where she directs the Helen Zell Writers’ Program. David Baker is an educator, editor, literary critic, and one of contemporary poetry's most gifted lyric poets. David has authored twelve books of poetry as well as six books of prose. His forthcoming Whale Fall will be out in summer 2022. Among his awards are prizes and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Society of America, Mellon Foundation, and the Society of Midland Authors. He continues to teach literature and poetry at Denison University, in Granville, Ohio, where he lives, and is currently editing an ongoing ecopoetics folio, “Nature’s Nature,” at Kenyon Review. Gramercy Books is a locally-owned, independently-minded neighborhood bookstore located in the heart of Bexley, Ohio (just outside of downtown Columbus) that opened in December of 2016. Inspiration and discovery through books is cultivated in a variety of events throughout the year that include author visits and festivals, book signings, poetry readings, a monthly book club, and songwriter performances. Gramercy Books shares space with Kittie’s bakery café.
