An interdisciplinary panel presentation and subsequent discussion conducted by members of Break the Cycle of Autism Disparities.
On Tuesday, March 1st join the Atlanta Autism Consortium for an interdisciplinary panel presentation and subsequent discussion conducted by members of the Break the Cycle of Autism Disparities, a special interest group of researchers interested in promoting autism equity on local, national, and international levels.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is less recognized as a condition impacted by disparities in research on community differences, access to care and advocacy. These disparities are connected to social factors such as race, gender, ethnicity, culture, socio-economic status, and geographic location. Disparities can lead to delays in evaluation and diagnosis, insufficient or no access to care, missed- and misdiagnoses, poor educational programs, higher rates of unemployment and criminal justice interactions, and the development of other health, social, and economic concerns.
With this panel presentation and subsequent discussion, we will highlight current research on autism disparities in Georgia and a model for examining domains of structural and personal-mediated racism in autism science, representation, and policy.
