MOUNT VERON, NY — Two leaders of the Mount Vernon "Goonies" street gang have now been sentenced for murder and racketeering in connection with a 2014 murder of a rival. Raheem Jones (aka "Trigga") was sentenced to 25 years in prison for participating in the murder of Dean Daniels and his participation in multiple other shootings for the gang, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams announced. In November 2021, co-defendant Markel Overton (aka "Kellz") was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his participation in the murder and other violent acts for the Goonies. Between 2007 and 2017, Jones and Overton were both senior members of the Goonies, according to court documents. In the afternoon of September 22, 2014, Overton and Jones accompanied two other Goonies associates to retaliate against Daniels for stealing a Goonies member's car. When they spotted Daniels, Overton and Jones waited in the car while the two Goonies associates left the vehicle with a gun to confront Daniels. The Goonies fatally shot Daniels twice near Park Avenue in Mount Vernon before running back to the vehicle to flee. Jones, 33, pled guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of using a firearm in connection with an assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering (which carried a maximum penalty of life in prison, and a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison). Overton, 32, pled guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy (which carries a maximum penalty of twenty years in prison). The Mount Vernon Police Department and the FBI's Westchester County Safe Streets Task Force were credited with bringing those responsible to justice.
