MILWAUKEE, WI — Eight children and a driver were okay after a school bus crashed into a Milwaukee home on Monday in the city's northwest side. A car ran a stop sign and hit the bus at high speed on N. 17th Street and W. Vine Street, Lamers Bus Lines safety manager Diane Hanke told Patch. The bus was pushed off the road and destroyed a wheelchair lift as it hit the porch. The driver, who has 12 years experience, had to choose between hitting a porch and hitting a tree Hanke said. The driver took the porch and police said they did everything right. The driver of the car returned to the scene to take the license plate off of a bumper they left behind, a neighbor's security camera showed. The car wass described as a blue SUV, the Milwaukee Police Department said in a statement. Police are looking for the driver, who remained unknown. The bus driver was "rattled emotionally" over how fast the car was going and the potential danger, Hanke said. Drivers go through retraining when they get in an accident according to company policy. "Nobody's hurt and everyone's alive. Property can be fixed, but people not so much," Hanke said.
