VIENNA, VA — Nightly lane closures are back on Interstate 66 at Cedar Lane in Vienna for continued Transform Outside the Beltway project work, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. On the nights of Monday, Jan. 31 to Saturday, Feb. 5, eastbound I-66 will be reduced to one lane east of Cedar Lane to Gallows Road. Hours for the lane closures are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastbound traffic will be directed onto a single lane and diverted behind a barrier. On Tuesday night, two lanes will be closed, and eastbound traffic will remain in the regular lanes. The lane closures are due to overhead bridge work and bridge beam installation for a new access ramp to the future I-66 Express Lanes. VDOT is also demolishing the remaining pier from the old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66. Ramp closures are also planned the week of Jan. 31 during overnight hours. On Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, the ramp from northbound I-495 to westbound I-66 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly for overhead bridge work. Drivers can continue north to westbound Route 7, stay right to southbound I-495 and follow signs for westbound I-66. The ramp from northbound I-495 to eastbound I-66 will be closed nightly from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Jan. 31 to Feb. 4. Drivers can continue north to eastbound Route 7, travel about a mile and follow signs for eastbound I-66. From Feb. 2 to Feb. 3, the ramp from eastbound I-66 to northbound I-495 will be closed from midnight to 4 a.m. for bridge work. Traffic will be detoured to southbound I-495. Drivers can exit at eastbound Route 50, stay right to Fairview Park, take the left fork at Fairview Park North, bear right at the traffic signal, and stay right to follow signs to northbound I-495. On the nights of Feb. 3 and 4, the eastbound I-66 ramp to eastbound Route 50 will be closed from midnight to 4 a.m. road construction. Drivers will be detoured to Route 50 West, exit to Route 608 South, and stay right to eastbound Route 50. The new Express Lanes will run alongside regular lanes between the Capital Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The expected opening date of the lanes is December 2022.
