Passenger Gives Birth On Flight From Ghana To Dulles Airport

DULLES, VA— A woman traveling on a United Airlines flight from Accra, Ghana to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) gave birth Sunday with the help of fellow passengers, according to news reports. When the pregnant woman, who was originally expected to deliver the child in late February, went into labor, flight personnel on UA 977 asked if any of the passengers had medical experience, according to BBC Pidgin.* Dr. Stephen Ansah-Addo, a Ghanaian physician who practices in the U.S., stepped forward. He and a flight attendant, who was also a nurse, converted the plane's business class section into a maternity ward and assisted the woman in delivering the baby, according to the BBC. Once the plane landed at IAD, paramedics came on board and transported the mother and newborn baby boy to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
