Greenwich Schools To Loosen Some COVID-19 Mitigation Strategies

GREENWICH, CT — With cases continuing to decline, Greenwich Public Schools will loosen some COVID-19 mitigation beginning this week. Athletics will welcome back more spectators, and clubs will return to in-person, according to an email from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Toni Jones to district families last Friday. Jones said the district "is constantly monitoring how we can adjust when spikes go up or down." "Returning from December's break, the District tightened up for the month of January as cases were very high," Jones said last Friday. "However, cases are trending down significantly and next week we will begin February by loosening back up again." The district saw record case numbers in January, thanks in part to the highly contagious omicron variant and the holiday season. From Jan. 4 to Jan. 21, according to the district's COVID-19 tracker, GPS recorded 1,321 COVID-19 cases, surpassing the total from the entire 2020-2021 school year. But since Jan. 21, cases are on the decline, with 61 new cases reported on Jan. 25, and 40 new cases on Jan. 28. The 40 represents the lowest increase since Dec. 14.
