MOKENA, Ill. — Rumors of Mayor Frank Fleischer's pending resignation have been greatly exaggerated.
Fleischer, who was re-elected to his third term as mayor in April 2021, shot down social media speculation that he intended to resign from his position during the Monday, Jan. 24, Village of Mokena Board of Trustees meeting.
According to Fleischer, those rumors were centered around the Village Board appointing Trustee Debbie Engler as mayor pro-tem while Trustee George Metanias — who previously was mayor pro-tem — was unable to fill that role.
"Years ago, when I was a trustee – this is a long time ago – when the mayor for some reason didn't come to a board meeting, the board that night would vote on the mayor pro-tem for that meeting," Fleischer said during the Jan. 24 meeting. "What we did was appoint and vote on a mayor pro-tem, so we didn't have to go through that [old process]. George couldn't make [meetings] for a little bit, and I didn't want to have that position open for a while. So, I asked Trustee Engler to take that position, which she graciously did. George is back, so I'm reappointing [him] to that position. In no way, shape or form am I going to resign. So, you can just keep on wasting time on the social media saying that [I] am leaving."
Earlier in the meeting, Metanis was reappointed as the mayor pro-tem in a 5-0 vote.
