Press release from the Chicago Public Library: January 31, 2022 Are you creative or crafty? Do you enjoy making things for people and sharing your craft? You could be our next maker-in-residence. Apply by 11:59 p.m. on February 20, 2022. As the CPL Maker-in-Residence, you'll share your creative process with library patrons and create a work to be displayed in a window of Harold Washington Library Center on State Street. Two residencies are available. Each residency will run for three months with the first term from April to June and the second term from August to November. The Makers-in-Residence will: Offer workshops for library patrons. Have access to Maker Lab equipment and staff assistance. Interpret local culture, history, or experiences using their craft, Maker Lab tools, and additional supplies. Create a work incorporating elements explored by workshop participants. Have their work exhibited at Harold Washington Library Center. Be compensated $6,000 for the three-month residency. About the Makers Our Makers-in-Residence used 3D printing to represent health information, dug into the Century of Progress, mapped Chicago's ecology, and machine knit portraits of Chicagoans lost to COVID. How might you grow your craft in the Maker Lab? About You Preference will be given to: Themes exploring creative reuse, community connections, bright futures, or digital storytelling. Crafts that can be done in a range of experiences from simple to more complex. Chicago residents. Residency Details You'll lead workshops for library patrons, in-person or online, or record how-to videos so library patrons can learn about you and your craft. You'll work about 10 hours per week on this project with a few regularly scheduled hours in the lab engaging library patrons. We have some flexibility on duration and start and end dates.
