Charlotte Nonprofit Receives $1M Grant To Support Girls In STEM

CHARLOTTE, NC — A nonprofit founded in Charlotte dedicated to expose girls to science, technology, engineering and math is set to receive a $1 million grant from Trane Technologies that's paid over three years. Project Scientist offers virtual after-school STEM Club and virtual summer camps for girls ages four to 12-years-old. The STEM club explores machine learning, climate change in national parks, and chemistry of medicine and pharmacology. Roughly 85 percent of Project Scientist participants are from underserved communities and get financial aid to attend the club. Thanks to the grant from Trane Technologies, the grant will support at least 800 girls each year of the grant, so 2,400 girls in total. "It's our honor to help expand Project Scientist's impact," says Steve Hagood, senior vice president and chief information officer for Trane Technologies. "Children exposed to STEM education are not just learning new skills in problem-solving, computational thinking and collaboration - they are absorbing the signals they see," says Hagood, who serves as Project Scientist's board chair.
