ATTLEBORO, MA — From the pandemic to the twists and turns of the U.S. Senate race, the 2020 September primary is going to be yet another interesting election in Massachusetts The marquee race this year is between incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Ed Markey and U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III. The reason why Kennedy wants to unseat a progressive who's been in Congress for 40-plus years is a little unclear, depending on how close you are to Hyannis Port. But Democratic voters in Attleboro have an important local race, too, where the 14th Bristol state representative nomination will be up for grabs in precincts 1 and 5 between Patrick Reynolds and Adam Scanlon. Another factor in the election is, of course, the pandemic. Early voting is happening through Aug. 28, but anyone in Massachusetts can vote absentee by mail this year — although uncertainty about the U.S. Postal Service has some voters nervous about that option. Residents can drop off mail-in voting applications and the ballots themselves. The box will be emptied twice a day and be monitored with a live-feed security camera. The box is for Attleboro residents only and is the preferred form of voting in the city to minimize the amount of traffic in the Elections Office due to the coronavirus crisis. Those who would like to drop their early voting ballots off in person can do so on the second second floor of City Hall at the Elections office. Those who have requested a mail-in ballot, but changed their minds and would rather vote in person must go through a process to cancel their mail-in ballot so it is ensured they are not voting twice.
