Music by Jazz Renaissance and a theatrical performance by Deondra Means; part of Voices of Freedom presented by Juneteenth Cincinnati Juneteenth Cincinnati presents Voices of Freedom, an exhibition of commissioned new works by 10 artists and 10 poets and performing arts series exploring the promise and reality of "freedom" as experienced by those whose lives and destinies were touched by emancipation. On Saturday, March 5, join us for a Playing for Freedom featuring a one-man theatrical performance by Deondra Means and music by Jazz Renaissance. The event is free, but tickets are required and space is limited. Masks and proof of COVID vaccination or negative COVID test result required for entry. Jazz Renaissance is a seven-piece jazz group formed in 2010, playing modern jazz in many styles, including bop, swing and Latin. The group has played in many local venues, including the Blue Wisp, the Whiskey Bar, the Juneteenth Festival, the Black Family Reunion, and others. Deondra Means is Resident Playwright, teaching artist and performer with The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati for the past 25 seasons. As a professional actor, he has performed and/or directed for ArtWorks, Cincinnati Opera, Theatre IV, Xavier Players, Future World Productions, Studio Theater, Happy Nia Productions, Kings Productions, Medasi African Dance and Drum Ensemble, Njo jo Family Productions, 144k Artistic Order, Show Biz International, St Louis Black Repertory Theatre, and Congo Square Theatre. A long-time educator in area schools, Mr. Means has the ability to bring to life through drama, historical lessons, world cultures and literature to help students to better understand what is required in the classroom and beyond. This event is made possible by American Rescue Plan funds from the City of Cincinnati, administered through ArtsWave. Founded in 2004, the Kennedy Heights Arts Center is a non-profit community arts center providing cultural events, art exhibitions, and arts education programs for youth and adults. It's mission is to enhance the life of our surrounding community through arts and cultural experiences that embrace diversity, foster creativity and build community.
