Arlington Animal Control Officer Helps Save Hawk Stuck In SUV

ARLINGTON, MA — Arlington Animal Control Officer Diane Welch helped save the life of a hawk that got trapped in the grille of an SUV last week. Welch said the driver hit the hawk down the Cape and drove for an hour on the highway with it stuck in his car. The driver told Welch that he had used a shovel to try to get the bird out. "I thought for sure it was dead," Welch wrote on Facebook. "As I tried to see how best to free it I thought I saw the tiniest movement in its wing." Welch freed the hawk without taking apart the car and saw it open its eyes and mouth. The bird was given medication to help alleviate pain and reduce brain swelling, and rushed to Tufts Wildlife Hospital in North Grafton. "Tufts called me Saturday to give me incredible news, the hawk is doing really well," Welch wrote. "They called again yesterday and the hawk is standing, eating, casting pellets and will be able to be released in the near future."
