From Your Arlington: 18 September 2020 Written by Leland Stein The Regent Theatre in collaboration with Starting at Zero will host a live streaming event at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the passing of Jimi Hendrix--one of the most iconic and influential musicians and entertainers of our era. The event will feature an exclusive presentation from England hosted by filmmaker and author Peter Neal with special guests at 6:30, followed by a special tribute concert at 8 p.m. featuring music from throughout Hendrix's brief but prolific career. Tickets are $20.20 for digital entry to the event. To purchase tickets and for more information, please visit www.regenttheatre.com. Part one of "Jimi Hendrix Returns" is a live interactive event celebrating the music and highlighting the message of Hendrix by drawing parallels between the divisive sociopolitical issues of the 1960s with the divisive issues facing the world today. The event begins with a presentation including 35 minutes of exclusive clips from Peter Neal's new film "Starting at Zero," about the music, life and times of Hendrix, narrated entirely in Jimi's own words. The film is a window into his mind, his inner motivations and the genius of his music. "At Woodstock, Hendrix made one of the most powerful political statements ever made by an artist or musician," says Neal Starting At Zero. "His rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' encapsulated the dreams and aspirations of the '60s generation, speaking to the state of America at the time." "'Starting At Zero' looks at Hendrix in the context of history," says producer Greg Roselli. "His belief in the power of music to affect change is as relevant and as important today as it was to the Woodstock Generation. That said, Jimi would see little change with respect to issues like equality, climate change and peace. This is the purpose of the event." The presentation will be followed by a live interactive discussion with Neal, who in 1967 produced Jimi's first film, "Experience/See My Music Talking," and who wrote the book Starting at Zero: Jimi's own story. Guests invited to participate in the discussion include Kathy Etchingham, Joel J. Brattin, John Masouri and Roselli. Questions can be submitted in advance or during the live event. Part two of "Jimi Hendrix Returns" will feature a livestream "Jimi Hendrix Concert Tribute" from the Regent Theatre by the Earth Blues Revue featuring an all-star cast of Boston musicians including Julien Kasper, guitar; Jesse Williams, bass; Mark Teixeira, drums; and Chris Cote, vocals, with guest Jen Kearney. "Jimi Hendrix Returns" is produced by Peter Neal, Greg Roselli, Leland Stein, and Joel J. Brattin. Notice: The book and film "Starting at Zero" and this event are produced without input, assistance or authorization from Janie Hendrix, Experience Hendrix LLC, or any other associated party. Part Two 8:00pm ABOUT THE EARTH BLUES REVUE Jesse Williams - Bass Guitar / Bandleader Jesse Williams is renowned by top musicians across genres for being a musical chameleon, able to genre hop and fit in with anybody. He's got his own thing, but loves melding into the group and gluing things together. His depth and versatility landed him full-time gigs with The North Mississippi Allstars (his current gig), Al Kooper (Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Blood Sweat & Tears), Duke Robillard (Grammy-nominated guitarist with Bob Dylan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tom Waits), Johnny A (The Yardbirds, AAA #1 hit artist), along with appearances backing Jay Geils, Susan Tedeschi, Maria Muldaur, Ronnie Earl, Bucky Pizzarelli, Charles Neville, Ruth Brown, John Hammond, Johnnie Johnson, Elan Trottman, Jimmy Vivino, John Blackwell, Mike Smith, John Sebastian, Rodney Crowell, Brandy Clark, Jay McShann, Charlie Musslewhite, Henry Butler, and many others. Williams once played with Hendrix fanatic Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and founder of the Experience Music Project in Seattle, and has a loose association with Hendrix via his former bandleader of a dozen years, Al Kooper, a friend of Jimi's who played on Electric Ladyland 's "Long Hot Summer Night" and also jammed with him. Julien Kasper - Guitar Animated by the exquisite soundscape created by Jimi Hendrix, Julien Kasper has constructed a deep, jazz-shaped identity of his own. His music, played with a giant palate of electric texture and tone, is an organic amalgam of jazz, rock, and funk with an evocative, bluesy groove and a deep, expressive vocabulary. Kasper has released three critically acclaimed albums of original music and has performed extensively in the United States and abroad as a leader and sideman. He is a Professor in the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music where he has brought his passion for the music of Jimi Hendrix to bear by developing and teaching the Jimi Hendrix Lab. "While it's hard to describe what Kasper does, he's certainly one of the most imaginative composers and players working with the guitar today." John Heidt, Vintage Guitar Mark Teixeira - Drums American drummer Mark Teixeira is a member of GRAMMY-nominated guitarist Duke Robillard's band, with whom he's featured on the album "Duke Robillard and His Dames of Rhythm" which features a host of female vocalists including Maria Muldaur, Madeleine Peyroux, and Elizabeth McGovern. He has also recorded and performed with a long list of Blues and American music greats, including Al Kooper's Funky Faculty, The Rekooperators (fronted by Jimmy Vivino and Al Kooper), Little Milton, Ruth Brown, Johnny Johnson, James Harmon, Billy Boy Arnold, Kim Wilson, Jimmy McGriff, Joe Louis Walker, John Hammond, Scott Hamilton, Otis Clay, Roomful Of Blues, Rick Danko and Jimmy Vivino & the BlueSoul Rockers. Chris Cote - Vocals "Force of Nature" Chris Cote is a Boston-based singer/guitarist/bassist/instructor/voice over artist. He performs in a variety of ensembles including The Upper Crust, Rock Bottom, Andrea Gillis Band, Solo Adultos, and The Giant Kings described as follows by Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz in his Boston Magazine Blog: "The Giant Kings [who include guitar phenom, Duke Levine] are the elite of Boston's roots musicians, with lists of credits that include Peter Wolf, Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Hammond, Roomful of Blues, and others. Their sets are a master class in swing, soul, feel, finesse, and taste… What singer could possibly hold his own against this imposing crew? Why, it is Chris Cote, he of the bellowing, cooing, caressing, and clobbering vocal capabilities." Jen Kearney - Vocals Originally from Boston, Jen Kearney has spent time abroad seasoning her particular style of original music. Her latest album, "Age of Blame" is an amalgamation of musical styles including Soul, R&B, Funk, Rock, and Latin. Kearney's music and attention to lyrics have met critical acclaim nationally and internationally. She has recorded and released six studio albums and has done session work on many other projects, and has toured the globe both as a solo act and with a full band. Kearney has spent the last two years in London touring the UK with her own act and with the legendary Snowboy & the Latin Section. She has shared the stage with the likes of Maceo Parker, Los Lobos, Daryl Hall, Mavis Staples, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, The Derek Trucks Band and more. "Jen Kearney is a gifted singer who can belt out a song with the best of them. She puts a refreshing new spin on funk music, showing flashes of funk's horn-drenched heyday in the '70s, but also modernizing it with thoughtfully conceived lyrics… simply mesmerizing." – Rolling Stone YourArlington.com has provided news and opinion about Arlington, Mass., since 2006.
