Description
From Your Arlington: Last Updated: 11 November 2020 Written by Lisa Cohen Arlington Community Education (ACE) is holding a special online highlight event, "Art in the Open: Appreciating Public Art," set for Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Led by local sculptor Paul Angiolillo, it will include a discussion about public art in Arlington with Adria Arch, one of the founders of Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture. This event is co-sponsored by Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture. The cost is $25. Register for this or any ACE class at www.ArlingtonCommunityEd.org. From the comfort of your home, enjoy, appreciate, learn, and offer your thoughts about public art. Look at and talk about all kinds of art in public spaces: environmental or "land" art, social, political, commemorative, art for art's sake, and more. Whether it's Maya Lin's celebrated Vietnam War memorial in D.C., the giant, playful sculptures at the Storm King sculpture garden in the Hudson Valley, installations along the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, or Andy Galsworthy's "Watershed" or the new permanent installation at the DeCordova Museum & Sculpture Park in Lincoln, outdoor art is all around, if one looks. Public art can delight, move, inspire, and calm—or be controversial or even inflammatory. What makes a piece "work"—or not? What has public art tried to express in the past, what is it about nowadays, and where might it be going?
