ARLINGTON, MA — The Select Board approved four Bluebikes docking station locations for East Arlington and Arlington Center on Aug. 17. The stations are part of Bluebikes' summer 2020 system expansion, which will connect Arlington with existing stations in Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, Everett, and Boston, as well as other new stations in Chelsea, Newton, Revere and Watertown. The stations will be installed at the following locations by Labor Day: Railroad Lot at Minuteman BikewayMass Ave at BroadwayBroadway at Grafton StMass Ave at Grafton St Two additional station locations require additional site work before they can be approved. The following stations will be reviewed by the Select Board during the Aug. 31 meeting: Linwood St at Minuteman BikewayMinuteman Bikeway at Thorndike Field Sites were selected based on their proximity to the stations presented in Option 2 of the Bluebikes survey, which received the most votes by respondents (37 percent). The Department of Planning and Community Development engaged with business owners, related Town departments, and Bluebikes staff to site the final locations as close as possible to those presented in Option 2. Some locations were adjusted based on site suitability, utility locations, public safety, parking demand, and Bluebikes station siting guidance. The Bluebikes expansion to Arlington is supported by an award of $80,000 in Workforce Transportation Grant funds from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The grant requires a local match of $20,000, which was approved by Town Meeting on June 15, 2020. The Bluebikes expansion is also supported by Lyft, the transportation network company that manages Bluebikes. Lyft is contributing more than $100,000 in bike share equipment to each new municipality participating in the program to assist with the start-up costs of the system. Blue Cross Blue Shield is a title sponsor of the Bluebikes system.
