ACTON, MA — The Acton Fire Department responded to two simultaneous incidents on Tuesday. One of the incidents was a medical emergency at a home swimming pool resulting in a medical helicopter being called and the other was a building fire at a lumber yard. Acton fire crews were called to a home on Newtown Road for a report of an injured swimmer in a backyard pool. After being treated on-scene, the victim — a 12-year-old girl — was taken to a Boston hospital in a Boston MedFlight in serious condition. While responding to the swimming incident, the Acton Fire Department was also called to respond to a reported fire at a lumber yard at 11:06 a.m. The fire at the lumber yard was at the roof of the storage building. Crews from the Boxborough, Concord and Littleton Fire Departments responded to the scene as well, while the Maynard, Stow and Westford Fire Departments provided station coverage. The Department of Fire Services rehab unit responded to the scene, providing firefighters with respite from the heat. Acton Police also responded to both scenes and provided support. Through a collaborative effort by all the crews on scene, the fire was largely knocked down shortly before 11:30 a.m. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The building inspector was called to the scene to determine the extent of the damage. "I want to extend a sincere thank you to the Acton Fire personnel who handled two serious calls simultaneously and with the utmost professionalism. I also want to thank the Acton Police Department and all of the firefighters from neighboring communities who provided support today," Chief Hart said. "The DFS rehab unit was also an invaluable asset at the fire scene, giving firefighters a much-needed break from the heat outdoors." The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the District 14 Fire Investigations Unit.
