BOSTON, MA — Massachusetts added another large number of new coronavirus cases on Saturday, according to the state Department of Public Health. There were 4,968 new infections reported, plus 47 new deaths. Saturday's figures come after three straight days of new cases totaling over 5,000, with the highest day this week Dec. 9, when more than 5,600 people tested positive. On Saturday, the statewide positive test rate did drop slightly from 5.72 percent on Friday to 5.6 percent. The state is in the midst of the second wave of the pandemic, with many health officials saying that cases spread over the Thanksgiving holiday are now coming into view. Also in Saturday's report, the number of people in intensive care jumped from 309 on Friday to 334. The number of total coronavirus hospitalizations rose by 65 to 1,670 statewide. The state has now seen 274,897 total cases since the spring and 11,057 deaths.
