Unmasked MBTA Riders Could Get Hit With $300 Fine

BOSTON, MA — The MBTA started enforcing face-covering directives on buses and trains Friday as new state restrictions went into effect. The governor's revised Executive Order, issued Nov. 2, requires any person over the age of 5 years old to wear a mask when in a place open to the public, including public transportation. Unmasked riders may face a fine of up to $300, the MBTA said. The agency's guidance to employees states that riders not wearing a face covering will first be given a warning. If they do not immediately put on a mask or face covering, they will be reported to the Operations Control Center, which will coordinate next steps with Transit Police. The order includes an exemption for people with certain medical conditions, but does not require documentation to prove such an exemption.
