TAMPA, FL — A teenager has been charged with armed robbery and second-degree murder in connection to an attempted robbery and fatal shooting in Takomah Trail Park, 10099 Takomah Trail, Dec. 28.
Amerie Roberts, 17, was arrested Wednesday after turning himself in.
Just before 4 p.m. Dec. 28, police were called to the park for a shooting and found Ian D. Thomas, 16, dead from a gunshot wound.
Police said Thomas was with a group of people who attempted to rob and shot a 32-year-old man. The man's gunshot wounds were not life-threatening.
The man defended himself by firing his legally owned and permitted concealed gun, striking Thomas. The others in the group fled before police arrived.
The victim of the botched robbery cooperated with police and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The investigation led detectives to Roberts who police said shot the robbery victim.
