The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the state of Delaware, with a blizzard warning for all of Sussex County. Snow will begin falling during the evening hours of Friday, Jan. 28, and continue through Saturday, Jan. 29. Accumulation is predicted from 4-6 inches in New Castle County, with the possibility of 8-12 inches in southern Delaware. Accumulating snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions. Delaware Gov. John Carney declared a state of emergency for Kent and Sussex counties, effective at 6 p.m., Friday, including a Level 2 driving restriction, which restricts travel on the roads to emergency workers, public utllities, healthcare providers and private sector food and fuel deliveries. At 10 p.m., Friday, New Castle County will be subject to a Level 1 driving restriction, which discourages driving on state roadways unless there is a significant safety, health or business reason, with all drivers asked to use extreme caution. Updates will be available on the state's weather information site. University of Delaware administrators are closely monitoring weather conditions throughout the state. Schedule changes for Saturday, Jan. 29 • The Barnes and Noble University of Delaware Bookstore is closed Saturday. University policy Members of the University community are reminded that safety is the highest priority, and individuals should not put themselves at risk if they expect difficulty traveling. Any campuswide UD closings or late openings will be announced through a campuswide email and via the University's LiveSafe smartphone application, as well as posted on the UD homepage and UDaily. News also will be available through the UD telephone information line at 302-831-2000, and it will be shared on the state Department of Education's School Closings and Delays website.  Members of the campus community should not call UD Police so that telephone lines there can remain open for emergency calls. The University's policy is reprinted below: Faculty and students are not expected to take unnecessary risks to meet their teaching and learning obligations due to inclement weather. When classes have not been canceled, it is a matter of personal judgment whether traveling to campus is hazardous. Faculty should notify their departmental offices when weather precludes them from meeting their teaching obligations; similarly, students should notify their professors when inclement weather precludes them from class attendance. In such cases, students should be allowed to make up missed class time and, whenever possible, canceled classes should be rescheduled. This press release was produced by the University of Delaware.
