DORCHESTER, MA — Firefighters battled large flames, smoke, and freezing temperatures after a fire broke out in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood Thursday night. Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Deputy Chief Michael Hocking said. Crews arrived at the scene at 9 Bowdoin St. just after 6:30 p.m. to find thick black smoke filling the air. Firefighters worked to make sure the fire wouldn't spread from the block of stores to nearby houses, the Boston Fire Department said. The water they used to put out the flames would freeze on contact with all surfaces, Hocking said. The largest part of the fire was taken down within about two hours, and crews remained on the scene to handle hot spots and investigate how the fire started. It is unclear if anyone was at the building at the time. No additional information was immediately available.
