BERKELEY, CA — Tips from the public helped lead to the arrest of a Berkeley assault suspect in connection with three incidents last week, UC police said. Alameda County prosecutors on Monday charged the suspect, identified the suspect as Berkeley man with no campus affiliation, with battery, resisting/obstructing a peace officer and unlawful lodging, police said. Officers at around 4:40 p.m. responded to a report of an aggravated assault near the Haas School of Business, on the UC Berkeley campus in which the victim suffered injuries after being shoved in an unprovoked attack, police said. While on scene, authorities received a second report of a battery that occurred just before the aggravated assault, at 4:38 p.m., police said. The suspect had pushed another victim in another unprovoked attack, police said. A follow-up investigation also indicated the incident was similar to a battery case reported the previous evening near Lewis Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. "UCPD sent a message to the campus community to be on the lookout for the suspect, and we received several tips, including one from a community member who recognized the suspect and called UCPD," the agency said in a statement. "Thanks to the vigilance of the community, officers located the alleged suspect near Lewis Hall on campus." Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call the UCPD at (510) 642-6760.
