My NYC-based word puzzle needs to look better!

I put together a prototype of a word puzzle based on NYC geography. My techniques were limited and outdated, and it needs improvement. A section of it is shown. It should look more like a map, more like land and water, more New York-y, and just more aesthetic. Color can be added!! I want to offer it to the NYT or NY Magazine... or it could be presented online where it might get noticed a bit. I have the entire image to send to anyone who might want to collaborate on the effort. No doubt you'd want to start afresh with an available outline map of the five boros. This is ideal for a fun page to have in your art portfolio. Likelihood for it to get bought for publishing is a bit remote, but I will be happy to divide by agreement any profits. It could of course be a fun thing for an artist's portfolio. It can have design elements that you think would be good.
