An intermediate-level class focused on the techniques used to construct garments from knit fabrics Two-part class Saturday, August 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Skill level: Intermediate Prerequisite skills: Mastery of home sewing machine; understanding of seam allowance and measurement; ability to cut accurately. Are you an experienced home sewist who would like to level up your skills by learning how to construct garments from knit fabrics? Would you like to gain experience on industrial and conventional sergers and industrial coverstitch machines? This two-session class will introduce sewists who have mastered basic sewing skills to the techniques involved in constructing garments from knit fabrics. Students will be constructing a T-shirt and shorts (both in sample sizes) from pre-cut fabric bundles provided by the instructor, in order to focus their time on getting comfortable with sewing the fabric. Only 5 places! Students will work on industrial and conventional sergers and industrial coverstitch machines. Students will: Sew a knit shirt with a collar;Sew a knit pair of shorts with an elastic waistband;Learn sewing vocabulary, including sewing machine parts and apparel construction terminology;Learn how to operate an industrial serger, straight stitch, and coverstitch;Receive instruction on how to read sewing instructions;Learn about grainlines and their importance; andLearn how to handle knit fabric. Fabric and elastic will be provided during the class; a shopping list for other necessary basic sewing supplies will be sent to students ahead of time. Masks will be required for the duration of class. Vision: Rightfully Sewn will lay a path to a contemporary version of Kansas City’s 20th-century golden era of garment design and manufacturing. Mission: Rightfully Sewn will provide seamstress training for at-risk women so they can thrive in a specialized workforce that will reestablish Kansas City as an epicenter of garment manufacturing, while at the same time, propel Kansas City fashion designers to market so they can supply the burgeoning demand for affordable, high-quality, American-produced garments.
