Week-long summer course introducing high-school age students to basic sewing skills and fashion as a career Monday, June 20 to Friday, June 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ages: 14 to 17 Skill level: Beginner to Early Intermediate Prerequisite skills: None Are you an aspiring fashion designer? Do you want to learn how to sew? Are you curious about ways to become involved in Kansas City’s fashion community? Join us for a hands-on, intensive experience for ages 14 to 17 that will teach the foundational skills necessary to design and construct simple garments and highlight a path to become a fashion designer. Featuring special guests from Kansas City’s fashion community! No experience required, but sewing machine experience helpful. Only 5 places! Students will work on Janome HD-3000 and School Mate 7330 straight-stitch home sewing machines and Janome and Babylock home sergers. Students will: Learn how to operate a sewing machine, use a pattern, and sew garments;Learn about about fabric types and their application in apparel design;Learn sketching techniques;Sew one garment that is emblematic of their fashion brand and showcase it via a fashion show for family;Use creative and problem-solving skills to expand their imagination; andHear from industry professionals about how to prepare for careers in fashion.A shopping list will be provided for students to purchase supplies ahead of class. Please note, a guardian will need to come into the Academy on the first day of class to review and sign the following required forms: Participant Agreement, Drop-off Consent, and Emergency Contact forms. The Photo Consent form is not required, but is greatly appreciated. Masks will be required for the duration of class. Vision: Rightfully Sewn will lay a path to a contemporary version of Kansas City’s 20th-century golden era of garment design and manufacturing. Mission: Rightfully Sewn will provide seamstress training for at-risk women so they can thrive in a specialized workforce that will reestablish Kansas City as an epicenter of garment manufacturing, while at the same time, propel Kansas City fashion designers to market so they can supply the burgeoning demand for affordable, high-quality, American-produced garments.
